Unique footwork sets up bizarre pushover try for Leicester's David Mele

This is an amusing try from Leicester Tigers in last weekend’s Aviva Premiership opening round victory over Newcastle Falcons. Replacement number eight Robert Barbieri came on and with the result all but sealed, he felt that this was the best way to control the ball for a pushover try.

As you can see, as David Mele dived on it to score the try, he made a pretty good point.

We saw Denis Leamy do this for Munster a few years back actually, in 2007, with great success.

The Tigers won the game 36-17, scoring four tries in total, including a hat-trick to Niki Goneva.

If I was the referee I would have told that centre to keep his hands off me.

I wasn't giving an opinion, I was just relaying information I'd heard on the tigers BBC podcast.

I believe the IRB define the legs and feet as separate entities, like the hand and arm. A number 8 can only use their feet to control the ball at the back, but they can't hold it between their knees.

It depends whether they consider that picking the ball up.

I heard he was told to do that because coming from treviso, he was so unused to the scrum going forward, let alone so rapidly that it was the best ball control solution they had.
