Warren Gatland’s time as Wales head coach is nearing its end, with the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) set to activate a break clause in his contract. Despite being contracted until the 2027 Rugby World Cup, the decision follows a record 14-match losing streak and a disastrous start to the Six Nations.
Per a report in WalesOnline the WRU board will meet on Wednesday to discuss placing Gatland on gardening leave and appointing an interim coach for the remainder of the tournament. Pressure has mounted after Wales suffered a crushing 43-0 defeat to France and a disappointing loss to Italy, leaving them winless in this year’s championship.
Who Will Replace Gatland?
Two leading candidates have emerged to take over—Simon Easterby and Franco Smith.
Easterby, currently Ireland’s interim head coach, has deep ties to Welsh rugby. The former Scarlets backrower spent most of his playing career in Wales and later moved into coaching at the region. He also resides near Wales’ training base and is married to Welsh TV presenter Sarra Elgan, making him a natural fit.
Smith, head coach of Glasgow Warriors, led his side to United Rugby Championship (URC) glory last season and has international experience from his time coaching Italy. The South African also has a history in Wales, having played for Newport during his career.
With the WRU eager to turn the page on a disappointing era, a decision on Gatland’s future—and his potential successor—could come as soon as this week.
