Ellis Genge responds after being ruled out of summer tour

BY Jack Tunney  ·  Friday May 24, 2024

Ellis Genge has confirmed that he will sadly miss England’s summer tour of Japan and New Zealand after damaging his left calf just 35 minutes into Bristol Bears’ 53-28 win over Harlequins at the weekend.

The injury has been deemed severe enough to rule the 29-year-old prop out of full international duties over June and July.

Somewhat fortunately, the injury occurred during the final match of the Gallagher Premiership season, now leaving Genge with a good few months to work on his recovery without the stress and pressure of returning to first-team action.

Genge is expected to be out of action for ten weeks in total after undergoing a scan of his calf this week and a second diagnosis from doctors.

Taking to social media to express his feelings surrounding the layoff, Genge said: “Every cloud… obviously gutted to be ruled out of summer tour but get a chance to spend some proper quality time with the family. Thanks for the well wishes.”

This will, however, give England head coach Steve Borthwick the opportunity to insert some fresh blood into the team. Young Harlequin Fin Baxter has made a real point for himself this season, as has Bath’s Beno Obano who will also be looking for a potential return to the squad.

Borthwick has already received news this week that Ollie Chessum will be missing the tour due to a shoulder injury, with the England coach expected to look at George Martin as the natural starting replacement in the row.
