Ma'a Nonu apologises for swearing during radio interview

BY Grant Constable  ·  Tuesday May 4, 2010

All Black Maa Nonu found himself having to issue an apology earlier today after he swore repeatedly during a live radio interview directly after the Hurricanes win over the Chiefs on Saturday.

Nonu scored two tries on the night, but instead of being in the headlines this week for his great play, hes had his voice spread all over the internet as fans are keen to hear what he had to say.

Hes since shown remorse, explaining that he was simply caught up in the moment after a frantic match. “It wasn’t meant to be like that but it was a bit of intense emotions coming out. I was just trying to speak the truth it’s a shame it happened like that. It was a tough game and that’s the way it came out,” he said.

“I guess being a professional sportsman you have to be responsible for what you say. At the end of the day, it hurts a lot of people. I just want to apologise to all the fans out there and all the listeners.”

The Hurricanes have reportedly punished him already, but the New Zealand Rugby Union will be meeting with him later in the week to discuss the offence.

The radio stations, Newstalk ZB and Radio Sport, are also in a bit of hot water and have received a formal complaint from the Broadcasting Standards Authority.

Bill Francis of Radio Network said that hes had sportsman swear on air before, but this was not the norm as Nonu dropped the F-bomb repeatedly throughout the interview.

“I probably have not heard that extensive a number used in such a short space of time. I understand the heat of the battle where a player comes off the field, but they are also aware of their commitments,” he said.

This video includes a news feature, the two tries that Nonu scored, and the full interview uncensored. If you have kids around, proceed with caution.
