It’s fair to say that after a brilliant year in France, Zach Mercer has gained a huge amount of attention back in the UK, with both supporters and Premiership clubs taking note of his recent performances.
As a result, Mercer has been linked with a move away from Montpellier with a host of English clubs interested. One of these clubs is Gloucester, arch rivals of the No.8’s former side, Bath.
One journalist posted on Twitter suggesting that a deal had already been agreed between Gloucester and Mercer, to which point a public user replied saying ‘Zach Mercer isn’t all that man. People will see’.
Rather than leaving the comment, Mercer responded to the account, saying ‘I can’t wait to see’. Clearly challenging the user’s negative opinion of his playing ability.

Interestingly the user seemed to backtrack immediately by saying that Zach’s response had ‘Good Energy’.
What made things funnier is that ex-teammates and friends of Mercer, jumped onto the Twitter thread to playfully join in poking fun at their good mate.
Josh Matavesi joked, “Yeh Zach, your a bag of sh**, with a breeze block for a head”. Which Elliott Stooke then agreed with.
Aside from the humorous side of the social media exchange, many have seen the comments from Mercer as confirmation that he is in fact joining Gloucester for the upcoming season.
If true, this would align with former Bath player’s vision to be in the upcoming World Cup squad, as he would be playing right under the nose of Eddie Jones week in, week out. It would also be an unbelievable signing for Gloucester as Mercer was instrumental in helping Montpellier win the Top 14 title last season.

Joyful Cherry and White fans have been quick to point out that their bitter rivals Bath, sold one of their best players in Mercer, only for him to kick on to greatness, the club head into steep decline and then Mercer join the team they hate the most – quite the story for a Gloucester fan…
