Montpellier number eight Zach Mercer has become English rugby’s “one that got away”.
A dynamic ball carrier that offers so much in attack as a link player and physical carrier that regularly gets his team over the gain line.
Following an uncertain season that ended on a positive note for England with a 2 – 1 series win in Australia. Mercer’s absence from the squad saw the return of Billy Vunipola who by and large performed well in Australia.
Eddie Jones though has continually talked about developing the English game ahead of next years World Cup.
In what would be a significant move for both English Rugby and Gloucester, it would seem that Mercer is on the verge of a Premiership return just in time for World Cup qualification.
Montpellier would no doubt love to hang onto Mercer who reminded English fans of his ability as he played a key role in knocking out then Premiership champions Harlequins of Europe last season.
For the Cherry and Whites, they have been steadily building and Mercer could be that missing piece that returns them to top four action next season.
