'I call bulls***' Andy Goode doesn't buy Etzebeth's World Cup story

Former England flyhalf Andy Goode is not one to mince his words, and this straight-talking has seen him carve out a role as one of the top rugby commentators in the game.

Co-hosting the ultra-popular ‘Rugby Pod’ with former Scotland international Jim Hamilton, Goode returned to the show following a three-week break.

Catching up on all of the news, the guys delved into an interesting topic following an interview with Springbok icon Eben Etzebeth last week.

Speaking about an incident following his team’s loss to Ireland at the Rugby World Cup, Etzebeth felt the Irish players had been arrogant by suggesting the two teams would meet in the final.

Taking umbrage with this take, Goode offered his views on the incident.

“Tell me about it. Was he surprised by what he thought he heard? Because I am going to call him out, I call bullshit.

“I call bullshit. You ain’t counting to twelve or thirteen straight after a game, son!” Goode said.

Responding co-host Jim Hamilton recalled the incident in real-time when he interviewed Etzebeth directly after the Springboks loss to Ireland.

“So Eben, after the game losing against Ireland after he got picked up by James Lowe and ‘Zombie’ was banging out, we went around the houses on that before.

“He came up to me and said, ‘We’ll get them back if they make it.’ That cold line gave me shivers, so that is where that came from.”

“So I asked him the question last week, and he wanted to talk about it.

“He said he found it weird that after the game, and I have an idea on this as well, but I didn’t say it on the podcast.

“But on the podcast, he is saying straight after the game, specifically twelve of them came up to him and said, ‘We’ll see you in the final,’ and he is taking it as if there is an arrogance around them.

“We know that probably isn’t the case, and they are saying it like ‘bad luck, we respect you, and we hope to see you in the final’.”

Interjecting, Goode responded with, “That’s the word; I reckon if anyone said it, they would’ve said ‘hope to see you in the final.’ Meaning we both know we are going our separate paths now.

“There is no way Eben can count to twelve shaking people’s hands.

“You’ve been in that situation, and you are absolutely blitzed, no one knows what’s going on, and you’ve just lost a game, and your emotions are everywhere.

“You ain’t going one, two, three, four, five, Caelen Doris, that’s the sixth person to say it; it is not happening, is it?

“What happened is I think someone probably said, ‘Hope to see you in the final or whatever’ because the Irish are good people, there is not a f****** chance they’ve all gone there.”
