There's no thinking about it Stroudos - Glen Jackson was wrong. There's not much to it. The ball is taken out of the ruck and O'Connell is onside, he runs forward, the ball gets passed around a bit (all open play and no new ruck forming) and O'Connell running back intercepts the ball. Considering that O'Connell was running back, Jackson thought he was coming back from an offside position, but he simply wasn't, and again, a South African referee makes an absolute dog's dinner of the situation and was subsequently made a fool of by the replay. If there was any justice they would have rescinded the card post-match, but I suppose they'll only do that for red cards.

Couple of observations: On first viewing of Cudmore's yellow, I thought "you plank, how blatant was that?", having already given away the penalty by lying all over the ball, he then scoops the ball out with his hand, directly in front of the ref, on the tryline. Doesn't get much more bloody stupid than that. HOWEVER, that is so stupid I looked more closely on the replay - pause around 0:49, isn't that Mr O'Connell's hand batting the ball away and cunningly disguising it as Cudmore's? A nice move, if you ask me! If that is the case, you could say POC got his comeuppance with his own sin-binning later. (As an aside, I just remembered these two have some previous with each other don't they!). Have to say I think Glen Jackson got this one wrong - I can't see any offside line here. When the replay starts around 2:23, the ball's already in open play, no ruck in view when POC attempts a conventional interception. Then as he runs back, (fast enough in my view not to be classed "lazy running", which surely only applies after a ruck or maul?), he collects a pass made in open play - ie no offside line so he can't be offside! Happy to be corrected on this one, as I'm not keen on criticising referees, but pretty sure I'm right.

Trying to imagine what Paul O'Connell is saying to Glen Jackson (ref) at 2:18 - hope it was something along these lines: Is that the best you can do Sir? Throw the back at me, show the crowd that this is your turf and you're not going to stand for it. Show me a red. Have me cited. Push yourself further Sir. Come on! Let's get going!
