Former Exeter Chief Jack Maunder is reported to have signed a contract in Australia ahead of the upcoming season after 13 years with the Devon-based club.
The Exeter exodus has been discussed in great detail over the past few months, with the Chiefs side expected to look very different next year. One player that’s found himself without a club is scrum-half, Jack Maunder, who was released from the squad following the conclusion of the 2022/23 season.
According to an exclusive scoop by the Australian publication The Roar; Maunder, who recently played for the Barbarians in their match again the World XV, has signed for the Melbourne Rebels.
The 26-year-old played alongside maverick flyhalf Quade Cooper in the Barbarians match and was fascinated by the potential of running rugby.
Speaking to Devon Live last month, Maunder discussed the game:
“I only hit one box kick today. I think I have been averaging 50 a game,
“All the boys were telling me to kick it because no one could suck in any more air but I thought ‘Surely not, c’mon lads I have just spent the whole season box kicking.’
“I loved it. That is one of the most enjoyable games I have ever had, doing stuff that I would never normally do and finding myself in spaces I don’t normally go. I found myself on the wing at one point. Just stuff like that.”
Cooper, who played for the Rebels back in 2019, clearly had quite the impact on the one-time England player:
“It was really interesting speaking to the lads about different philosophies on the game,” said Maunder.
“I spent a lot of time with Quade in training and just how he sees the game, how amazing and how smart he is.
“Just little things throughout the game, he was telling me if you do this, this and this you will get a break and it literally happened.
“I was like ‘Oh my god.’
“It is definitely something I am going to take away from the week, that I can look at how rugby is played a bit differently than I have done from the start of my career.”
