Namibian flanker Jacques Burger is one of the Aviva Premiership’s top tacklers. He was one of the more physical Saracens players against the Sharks at the weekend, where he made a few big hits. He’s managed to combine his physical attributes with solid technique, as well as a fearless mindset.

In November he set a new record for tackles in a Premiership match, 36, breaking the previous milestone of 27 set by former England and Leicester Tigers flanker Lewis Moody.

In this amusing and informative masterclass video from Rugby Tonight he shows us how he does it.

If you want to extend it to European clubs then you can put Michael Bent and Leinster on that list.

  • I'd put Nick Evans up there.

Seems like a great player to me, but I would put Alesana Tuilagi at the top of that list, I think he was massively influential for those bastard tigers for almost a decade.

For me the key bits in that were the parts that they didn't really dwell on too much; making your contact point on and around the ball, and planning how you'll get back to your feet as you make the tackle. It seems basic, but it can make a huge difference

As mentioned in other comments, it's Matt Hampson. More about him and the Matt Hampson foundation here

From where I'm standing, Burger is one of the best overseas signings a Premiership team has ever made (though I'm open to more suggestions!). Absolutely whole-hearted in every way; glad he's fit again.

  • Fun to watch, some ok points but really didn't learn much there, pretty basic stuff, which is I suppose why he's so good, but no doubt his bravery and physique help him as well

  • Brilliant video. The guy in the wheelchair (I think) was like an under 20s england prop who broke his neck, around...pff 2004 maybe before. But he was apparently quite a good player and had a really back scrum injury. I think him and a load of ex rugby players have set up a charity. He has been in England rugby magazine quite a lot, can't remember his name sorry.

Anyone know who the guy in the wheel chair is at around 1:05, neck injury player? Or someone with an illness? Great video...however...'the face tackle'? Someone care to explain?

Another quality piece on Rugby Tonight. Really interesting stuff! My favourite bit has to be Ben Kay putting the kid on his back "don't get cocky!" Big, tough man!
