The Aviva Premiership is up and running and that means Northampton Saints’ bone-collector Samu Manoa is on the loose. He made this crunching hit on Gloucester’s Billy Twelvetrees in the 53-6 thumping at Franklin’s Gardens at the weekend.

We’ve seen lesser tackles penalised recently, so even if he started low and slid up, with the way things are sometimes viewed these days, he was probably quite lucky to get away with this one.

Its foul play under 10.4(e) Look closely, The tacklers right hand/arm ends up around twelvetrees neck = dangerous. The supporters of this style of tackling are indirect advocates of the increased concussions in this code.

Terrific tackle. Below shoulder-height, and he wraps his arms, textbook stuff. Players shouldn't be considered lucky to get away with tackles like this, they should quite simply not be penalised.

Completely legitimate tackle; the hit was at chest-height and Billy Twelvetrees dropped like a sack of spuds The only thing Twelvetrees was contesting was that he thought it could've been a knock-on in the tackle

"The ball is out when the tackle occurs". Are you suggesting it was a late tackle, or just taking the p*$$? Whether it was high or not may be open to debate, but the timing was absolutely perfect!

It does show the difference in interpretation by the various refs. Wayne Barnes seems to love a good old-fashioned hit, it's one reason I like him as a ref.
