Friday Funnies - Clearing kick lands directly on touchjudge's head

You might not have seen this a few days ago if you only caught up on the highlights of Samoa vs New Zealand, but it was a pretty funny moment in the first half. More so because referee Jaco Peyper found it absolutely hilarious to see his touch judge get hit on the head by the ball.

Peyper has been a busy man of late, refereeing the Super Rugby Final, and then this historic clash in Apia. He will also take charge of the opening match of the Rugby World Cup on 18 September, between England and Fiji at Twickenham.

Unfortunately there wasn’t a good shot of Peyper laughing, but it’s quite funny nevertheless.

Yes, the rest of the world knows that the guy in this video is the deputy umpire.

You're correct - he's actually not the touch judge. No wonder he's just standing there so awkwardly. Fourth official probably. Jaco Peyper enjoyed it either way!

We have just about the worst commentators for rugby matches in America. They are absolutely horrid, and some of them played the game. My point is that commentators can't talk to the lowest common denominator, a TV viewer who has never seen the game, and talk about the game in that same vein. They don't seem to realize that most Americans who are even watching a rugby match on American TV, whether sevens (which is shown quite a bit lately), or 15s, probably have played the game and know the proper terms. As I said, it's not a sideline, but a touch line. Leave the gridiron football and basketball terms to those sports!

Well.... Supporters wear shirts of their teams, maybe this guy is just a really big fan of the referee?

Blimey, and I thought I was being dull! ;) To extend the pedantry though, I don't think this guy is a touch judge is he? The touch judge on this side is near the 22 where Ellis received the kick, with a flag in his hand. Not sure what the rugby term is for the bloke being falconed. In football (soccer), he would be the "fourth official".

Thanks for using the proper term " touch judge." He's not an assistant referee, as the in goal is not the try zone, and the touch line isn't the sideline. There's one referee in the game, and he or she is on the pitch with the whistle, not the touch judge running touch with a flag! I cringed last week watching and listening to the American commentary of the Women's World Cup final (while switching channels to see the San Francisco Giants baseball game), with terms like sidelines and "out of bounds" used. Soccer and rugby aren't American sports, and our terms for our sports shouldn't apply to those sports. But I'm sure when ESPN broadcasts the RWC this fall, Americans will not be exposed to the proper terms like touch line and in-goal.

*Buzzkill alert* The official should have been paying more attention and should have got out of the bloody way. Samoa player could have had that and launched a quick counter-attack - there's a bloke in a good position to receive a quick throw there. OK, it probably would have come to nothing, NZ had players fanned out across the pitch, but you never know...
