The Chiefs destroyed Schalk Burger’s Newlands farewell as they ran in eight tries for a punishing 60-21 win to book their place in the semi finals, where they will play the Hurricanes next weekend. The Stormers were outclassed by the more intense New Zealanders, who weren’t fazed by playing away from home.
Burger, who will head to Saracens for his swansong, described the match as a horror movie.
“Let us give credit to Chiefs for blowing us out of the water. It seemed like the harder we tried the worse it got. I feel sorry for our wonderful supporters — some harsh lessons were learnt out there tonight,” he said.
Chiefs skipper Aaron Cruden meanwhile lauded his team’s effort away from home.
“This was an exceptional team effort A really good performance after coming all the way from Dunedin to play here.
“Those two tries that built an early lead set the tone and we never slackened. Our boys put their bodies on the line to prevent the Stormers scoring for much of the second half.
“We have a young team who enjoy the game and play with passion. That was very evident here.
“The boys prepared well and now we must do so again before facing the Hurricanes. All I can promise is that we will give our all.”
The Chiefs will fly home to New Zealand to play the Hurricanes in the first semi final in Wellington, while the Lions will take on the Highlanders in Johannesburg.
