Rugby injuries are under the spotlight yet again this week following an eventful opening weekend in the Six Nations, and a build up that included a lot of focus on England’s injury troubles in particular. With that in mind, AposTherapy have put together this interesting infographic.

It looks at the most common types of injuries that occurred at the 2011 Rugby World Cup (3.6 injuries per game), and looks at how those injuries took place. View the stats below, and for more detailed analysis from an England point of view, you can visit the AposTherapy blog.

injuries are a large part of our game and often times determine the success and failure of team goals set forth at the beginning of the season. I have always told younger players that are not starters to keep putting their bit in because there will be injuries and opportunity. Its advantageous but its real and the teams with the solid second side have a huge advantage over a long physical season. I was out for 2 straight last season with separated and cracked ribs and it gave time to a keen youngster to get some PT... Play hard, prepare and be ready when the other shoe drops!

Disturbing to see that more backs were injured in the maul than forwards!

Interesting. My personal safety mantra has always been "stay away from the front five", not that I'm built for any of those positions anyway. According to this, the position I tend to play most of my rugby - centre - attracted the highest number of injuries in this study. Oh dear....
