Rugby World Cup Daily - Retirements, resignations, injury, and Semis

BY Grant Constable  ·  Monday Oct 10, 2011

The top three sides from the 2007 Rugby World Cup joined Ireland in departing New Zealand following quarter final losses this past weekend. Rugby World Cup Daily brings all the news on retirements, resignations, injuries, and semi final previews.

Veteran All Black fullback Mils Muliaiana has bowed out international rugby, and the tournament, following a shoudler injury he suffered during his 100th match, played against Argentina. In an emotional press conference Mils spoke of having to come to terms with the rollercoaster ride that is professional rugby.

“I’m particularly proud to be an All Black, but it’s a little bit sad bccause I know I’m not going to be back. But I’ve met some amazing people. I’m proud to be a Kiwi,” he said.

Colin Slade is also out injured following a torn abductor, which also took place during the 33-10 quarter final win. Aaron Cruden, who was impressive when coming on as replacement, looks likely to take over. The All Blacks do have the option of shifting Piri Weepu to number ten, while Bath bound Stephen Donald joins the squad as cover.

Elsewhere, South Africa’s controversial coach hinted at stepping down as coach, but contrary to what is stated in this video, he hasn’t officially resigned yet. “I never said I resigned. I said I was unsure about my future” De Villiers said earlier today.

Victor Matfield and John Smit are officially retiring from international rugby though.

RWC Daily also reports on the strange coincidence that the final four sides left in the world cup are the same four that contested the first ever tournament back in 1987, also in New Zealand. There’s a look back at those games, Andrew Mehrtens takes on a robot, and we go inside the Wales camp.
