The Chiefs win entertaining inaugural Brisbane Global Tens tournament

Super Rugby franchise the Chiefs came out on top in the first ever Brisbane Global Tens tournament over the weekend, beating the Crusaders 12-7 in the final. All teams competed for a total of AUS $1.6 million in prize money.

The competition, held at Suncorp Stadium, home of the Queensland Reds featured all five of Australia and New Zealand’s Super Rugby teams, as well as selected invitational sides such as Toulon, the Bulls, Panasonic Wild Knights and Samoa.

The format of the game is aimed at providing “the speed of Sevens and the physicality of 15s” and this was certainly delivered during the two days in the Queensland capital.

True to its name, matches are comprised of two 10 minute halves.

The final itself was an intriguing affair as the Crusaders took an early lead through Andrew Makalio, who touched down in one of the few driving mauls of the weekend. The Chiefs fought back though and took the lead through Luke Jacobson – with Tim Nanai-Williams converting – and Taleni Seu.

A sombre Chiefs captain Liam Messam lifted the trophy, paying tribute to former team-mate Sione Lauaki, who sadly passed away a few days ago.
