Ireland hosted the Barbarians on Friday night at Thomond Park for a game that turned out to be successful for the Baabaas. After losing out against England a week ago, they put in a strong first half performance to beat an under-strength Ireland side 29-23.
Cardiff Blues eighthman Xavier Rush captained the famous Barbarians on the night. He scored their first try before George Smith and Cedric Heymans crossed, with Brock James and Jean-Baptiste Elissalde kicking the points which got the hotchpotch side the victory.
Their team included a few Irish players this week, with former Ireland lock Malcolm OKelly playing his final professional game, and Alan Quinlan on the flank going up against his countrymen.
The Barbarians built up a lead of 21-3 before Ireland fought back well with tries to Niall Ronan and Tony Buckley. Ronan OGara kicked 13 points but it was to no avail as their late charge was held off by the Barbarians, resulting in a famous win for the club.
Ireland now travels to Australasia where they will face All Blacks on the 12th of June, and the Wallabies in Brisbane on the 26th of June.
